Cantilever
racks used in a Service Center for bar or sheet permits the quickest possible
placement, storage and removal of loads of varying length. As cantilever
racks do not have posts along the aisle, they provide the most flexible
possible storage system. A cantilever rack system will help achieve full
space utilization and 100% selectivity. Loads can be stored and retrieved
without regard to their length with a minimum of vertical space consumed
for each load stored.
Some of the benefits from cantilever racking include the following; inventory control will be greatly simplified, as all loads will be visible for inspection, counting or weighing. Access with handling equipment is less expensive, faster, and gets incoming or out-moving loads out of the way of other operations. Cantilever racking permits a logical arrangement of stock by size and shape or by part number or end-use. Cantilever racking will also help utilize the building cube to the utmost because side-loading trucks and stacker cranes require very little aisle and can stack to 30' or higher. Cantilever racks have no posts or columns along the aisles, permitting up to a 25% additional capacity over conventional racks. Only one 6 ft. long load, for example, could be stored on 10 ft. long shelf beams in standard pallet racking systems, leaving 4 ft. of shelf unused. With cantilever racks, the spacing, end-to-end, of the loads would be much closer and more space efficient. Pans or skids may be used with cantilever racks to hold small bars, tubing, pipe, etc. A few pieces may be manually removed from the pan or skid for shipment or use, or the load may be removed from the rack by sideloader for selection of items from it.
